Types of Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced Classes

Bonsai Fundamentals/Maintenance Class (beginners to advanced)

Saturday 27/04/24 

The class starts at 10.00am and goes to about 1.15pm (Cost: $85)

Learn the essentials of how to maintain your bonsai across the four seasons in the South Australian climate.

This will include learning the following skills:

- Properly watering your bonsai;

- When, why and how to fertilize your bonsai and apply the appropriate chemicals to control pests and diseases;

- Learn how to prune your bonsai across the seasons (species specific);

- Understand the mechanics of wiring your bonsai;

- Understand and carry out the essentials of repotting your bonsai;

- Troubleshoot for bonsai problems.

There will be short demonstrations of the various aspects of maintaining your bonsai. Participants are welcomed to bring their trees for advice and assessment.

There will also be a question/response session, so please come armed with questions.

On the day itself, the nursery will give you a discount for any extra purchases of tools, pots, wire and other accessories.

Tea, coffee and refreshments will be provided during the session.

Olive Bonsai Design and Maintenance Class (beginners to advanced)

The class starts at 10am and goes to about 1.30pm (Cost: $95)

Olive trees flourish in our South Australian climate and, hence, make good bonsai subjects.

Learn the fundamentals of how to maintain olive bonsai by way of the following:

  • The basic steps of how to style a rough stock olive tree in keeping with design principles;​

  • Pruning;

  • Fertilizing;

  • Watering;

  • The mechanics of wiring; and

  • Choosing the appropriate growing media for our olives to thrive in our climate.

The cost includes:

  • Advice and assessment of participants’ trees, so please bring along your trees (limit 2 per participant);​

  • A question/response session, so please come armed with questions; 

  • A short demonstration of the various aspects of maintaining your olive bonsai; and

  • A hands-on experience of how to undertake certain pruning techniques related to olive maintenance.

On the day itself, the nursery will give you a discount for any purchases of trees, tools, pots, wire, potting media and other accessories.

Autumn Fundamentals Bonsai Maintenance Class (beginners to advanced)

The class starts at 10.00am and goes to about 1.30pm (Cost: $85)

Autumn is a significant season in the bonsai calendar. What we do to our bonsai during this season brings together all the work our bonsai trees have done prior to autumn, and helps prepare them for winter dormancy and, importantly, for spring growth.

Understand what is going on in our bonsai during autumn, and learn the fundamental techniques we need to apply to our bonsai this coming autumn. This applies to both evergreen and deciduous conifers and broadleaf trees.

The cost includes:

  • Advice and assessment of participants’ trees, so please bring along your trees (limit 2 per participant);​

  • A question/response session, so please come armed with questions; 

  • A short demonstration of the various aspects of maintaining your evergreen/deciduous bonsai during autumn; and

  • A hands-on experience of how to undertake certain pruning techniques related to various species of trees.

On the day itself, the nursery will give you a discount for any purchases of trees, tools, pots, wire, potting media and other accessories.

Tea, coffee and refreshments will be provided during the session.

Beginners Bonsai Design Class (classes run from mid Winter to early Spring)

​The class starts at 10.00am and goes to about 4.00pm. The end time will depend on the size of the class.

Style a tree and take it home to keep (Cost: $225 includes lunch)

The cost includes a tree to style (juniper species) on the day and to take home, aluminum wires for training the tree during the workshop, and a special pre-mix potting media for optional repotting of the tree on the day, if the student wants to.

The repotting is made optional since the student will need to purchase the pot from the nursery on the day itself. As the choice of the pot will take into account the style of the tree, a pot is not included as part of the cost.

Tea, coffee and lunch will be provided during the day's workshop.

History of Bonsai from Penjing to the Present Day

The class starts at 10.00am and goes to about 1.00-1.15pm (Cost: $95)

This class aims to introduce bonsai as a concept, as well as the historical and cultural contexts of bonsai artistry. The following topics will be presented and discussed:
 

- What is bonsai?

- The origin of bonsai before Japan (Chinese penjing to Japanese bonsai)

- An overview of bonsai development in Japan

- Bonsai in the West (including Australia)

- Styles, traditions and cultures

- "Bonsai professionals/masters"

- Bonsai in the media

- The essential bonsai library

- Bonsai culture and you

There will also be a question/response session, so please come armed with questions.

On the day itself, the nursery will give you a discount for any extra purchases of tools, pots, wire and other accessories.
